Claudia Comte finds her inspiration in nature, architecture and popular culture, her extensive travels providing her with a culturally diverse outlook on all these subjects that she communicates through her anthropomorphic sculptures. The chainsaw being her tool of choice, Comte vigorously commences the sculpting process, yet delicately finishes by carefully smoothing each work into a haptic form resembling a mix between cartoons and a work by Brancusi. Site-specificity being of great importance to Comte, she creates environments where wall paintings highlight her sculptural work. Not limiting herself to one specific medium, she combines paintings, sculpture and video to create an all-encompassing experience in which to discover her work.Caroline Lommaert

Describe your work in five words.
Cut, burnt, painted, chopped, shot.

Why did you apply and what will you do if you win the Schweizer Kunstpreis?

It became a tradition that I apply to the Schweizer Kunstpreis, and if I would win, I will go on a horse-riding trip through Kirghistan. Also I would be able to rent a larger studio in Berlin for my work, which would be great.

What is your favourite work of art?
Apollo and Daphne, made from one block of marble by Bernini. When you knock on the sculpture, the leaves of marble are shaking, its so fine and amazing. Unfortunately you are not allowed to do so at the Villa Borghese.

Where do you come from, where are you now, where are you going?
I come from a tiny village in the Canton of Vaud, where my dad was Sheriff for 16 years. I'm currently hunting on a Safari in South Africa and I will be going to wherever new wild frontiers are presented to me in the future.
